France Has the Best Healthcare System in the World

June 30th, 2010
Sheila Guilloton asked:

As the United States struggles toward a system of universal health care, many have looked at the Canadian health care system as a model. Only a few have looked toward France. That’s a mistake for at least 2 reasons.

First, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), France has the best health care system in the world . It has been widely reported that the WHO found the French system to be number 1 while the Canadian system is number 30 and the U.S. number 37.

It should be noted here that the WHO rankings actually contain multiple rankings and the numbers generally quoted are the ranking based on the measure that the WHO calls the OP ranking. OP is said to measure “overall performance” adjusted to reflect a country’s performance based on how well it theoretically could have performed. When reporting the rankings of 1 for France, 30 for Canada and 37 for the United States, it is the OP ranking being used.

Why did the French system do so well in the WHO rankings? The French system excels in 4 areas:

It provides universal coverage It has responsive health care providers Patients have freedom of choice The health and longevity of the population

Second, we should be looking more closely at the French system because it has more similarities with the U.S. system than either the Canadian or British system. Many Americans assume that the French system is like the system in Britain. Nothing could be further from the truth or more insulting to the French.

Exactly like the United States, the French system relies on both private insurance and government insurance. Also, just like in America, people generally get their insurance through their employer. What is different is that everyone in France has health insurance. Every legal resident of France has access to health care under the law of universal coverage called la Couverture maladie universelle.

Under the French system, health insurance is a branch of Social Security or the S?curit? Sociale. The system is funded primarily by taxing the salaries of workers. An employee in France will pay about 20% of their salary to fund the S?curit? Sociale. These taxes represent about 60% of the cost of the health insurance plan.

The balance of the funding comes from the self employed, who pay more than salaried workers, and by indirect taxes on alcohol and tobacco. Finally, additional taxes are levied against other income, both direct and indirect.

The French share the same distaste for restrictions on patient choice as American do. The French system relies on autonomous private practitioners rather than a British-style national health service. The French are very dismissive of the British system which they call “socialized medicine.” Virtually all physicians in France participate in the nation’s public health insurance, S?curit? Sociale.

Perhaps it’s time for us to take a closer look at French ideas about health care reform.

Acupuncture – Medicine Or Myth?

June 21st, 2010
S Matthews asked:

Time was when only junkies, piercing addicts and crazy folk willingly stuck loads of needles into their bodies. Not any more. Acupuncture, the traditional art of needle therapy, has become so popular that it’s almost become a mainstream form of medicine, with people using it regularly to help them quit smoking, alleviate muscle pain and even treat infertility.

As former family practitioner Harry Hall put it on the website Quackwatch: “Acupuncture studies have shown that it makes no difference where you put the needles. Or whether you use needles or just pretend to use needles (as long as the subject believes you used them).

In fact, on TV’s Sex and the City, Charlotte went to an acupuncturist when she couldn’t get pregnant – although it didn’t work. It did, however, work swimmingly for an acquaintance of hers, an aging socialite called Bitsy von Muffling who married a gay man and got pregnant after just a few sessions with the aptly named acupuncturist Dr Mao. By Jove, it’s a miracle!

However, a recent US study of 600 patients said that acupuncture is no more better than sticking toothpicks into your skin – at least as far as helping with lower back pain is concerned. Published in the respected Archives of Internal Medicine, the study incorporated a control group who sneakily got toothpicks instead of needles, which did not actually pierce the skin. Surprisingly, the toothpicks worked just as well as the needles.

Their verdict: whether or not acupuncture works for you is really all in the mind – and they conclude this applies to this “ancient Chinese technique” practiced to help cure other ailments as well, not just back pain. But if it is all a question of mind over matter – and yet nonetheless has positive results – who really cares?

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture dates back for thousands of years, although its exact origins are not exactly clear. It is a rather bizarre way of healing where needles are inserted into pressure points in the body – sometimes called acupoints – to provide relief for what ails you.

There are many different types of acupuncture, and it is practiced differently by every practitioner. Some people believe in acupoints on the hands and feet, others concentrate on the ears. Others use virtually all parts of the body (well, not every part, thank goodness). Some rely on plain old needles, others use laser beams and even tiny magnetic pellets, or BBs. Sometimes, pressure points are worked on without the help of needles at all.

It is thought that the acupoints exist along the meridians of what the ancient Chinese called our qi, or where the energy naturally flows in our body. Stimulating them is supposed to have specific beneficial effects, and a trained acupuncturist can pinpoint areas to treat specific complaints.

Does it Really Work?

It’s unclear why acupuncture is seen as relatively mainstream these days, especially when scientific evidence is so difficult to prove, as is the case with the majority of procedures (it’s much easier to prove the efficacy or actual medicine than it is a technique). While some people believe that positive outcomes are largely placebo effects, others say acupuncture does actually work for specific problems.

In 2003 the World Health Organization published a study on acupuncture, saying that it had approved 20 diseases, symptoms or conditions for which acupuncture can treat, including hayfever, depression, facial pain, headache, hypertension, lower back pain, morning sickness, renal colic, rheumatoid arthritis, sciatica, sprain, stroke and tennis elbow.

It also listed diseases, symptoms or conditions “for which the therapeutic effect of acupuncture has been shown but for which further proof is needed,” and a shorter list “for which there are only individual controlled trials reporting some therapeutic effects, but for which acupuncture is worth trying because treatment by conventional and other therapies is difficult.”

Here are some of the most common ailments acupuncture aims to treat:

Infertility. Perhaps the most interesting use of acupuncture in recent years has been as a way to treat infertility. Although it didn’t work for Charlotte (see above), scores of women swear it has worked for them (the World Health Organization says further research is needed). The Berkeley Center for Reproductive Wellness has said that acupuncture is most effective when combined with herbal medicine and traditional medical intervention. Make your own conclusions from that!

Weight Loss. A multi-targeted approach here. Needles are inserted for a variety of reasons, to release feel-good endorphins, stop cravings, perhaps help with the functioning of the pituitary gland. Purports to also help with a general decrease in appetite.

Cessation of Smoking. Patients are treated on acupoints on their ears and body several times a week to both reduce cravings and calm the nervous system. Silver pellets sometimes are used to stimulate the acupoints between treatments and keep up the beneficial effects. It is said that smokers often quit two or three times before they quit for good – could this be one of those times?

Anxiety. Purported to work as it can promote deep relaxation, allowing both mind and body to heal together. Addresses kidney and heart imbalances, which are thought to result in anxiety, and sometimes uses auricular acupuncture, or ear acupuncture, to achieve good results.

Pain. Claims to be able to help with pain in some patients resulting from conditions such as fibromyalgia, sickle cell anemia, chronic neck pain and even shingles. Sometimes the needles are heated or a low electrical charge is sent through them before they are used.

Play it Safe

Acupuncture is a widely misunderstood form of alternative therapy which may or may not work for you. Some people say it is a life-saving art, others say any claims that it has any health benefits at all are dubious at best. As former family practitioner Harry Hall put it on the website Quackwatch: “Acupuncture studies have shown that it makes no difference where you put the needles. Or whether you use needles or just pretend to use needles (as long as the subject believes you used them).

“Many acupuncture researchers are doing what I call Tooth Fairy science: measuring how much money is left under the pillow without bothering to ask if the Tooth Fairy is real.”

Be aware that there are some risks, as acupuncture that is improperly performed can result in serious health problems, including fainting, hematoma, lung puncture etc. If you want to try acupuncture yourself and see if it works for you, make sure you visit only a qualified acupuncturist who practices in a safe, sterile environment using only disposable needles. Happy piercing!

STD Facts – Trichomoniasis

June 21st, 2010
Pauline Go asked:

According to the annual reports of the World Health Organization, about 7.4 million cases of Trichomoniasis are reported every year from the United States alone, and over 180 million cases of it surface from all over the world. Trichomoniasis (also known as “trich”) is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the world. It is caused by a flagellated motile protozoan, Trichomonas vaginalis. Human beings are the only known hosts for this parasite.

Trichomonas vaginalis is pyriform in shape, and the average size is about that of a white blood cell (9X7 pm). These parasites reproduce every 8 to 12 hours and therefore, the infection spreads quickly once the parasite infects the squamous epithelial lining of the genital tract. Incubation period ranges from 4 to 28 days and the infection may persist for long periods in females, but extend to a maximum of 10 days in males.

In most of the cases, Trichomoniasis is transmitted through sexual intercourse from the penis to the vagina or through vulva to vulva contact when an uninfected person indulges in sexual activity with an infected partner. Transmission can also occur through fomites such as bathing suits or towels.

In infected women, it causes severe itching or irritation in the genital area. This is accompanied by yellowish green vaginal discharge, having a characteristic fishy odor. Apart from this, the female also experiences pain during sexual intercourse. In infected men Trichomoniasis causes a discharge from the penis or burning sensation during urination or ejaculation.

Trichomoniasis is quite easily curable. In most cases of the infection, oral medication, typically tinidazole or metronidazole is used to cure trichomoniasis.

Tonik From Anthem Blue Cross

June 18th, 2010
Jeffrey Peterson asked:

TONIK from Anthem Blue Cross is a new concept in PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) health insurance.

The plan is marketed exclusively by the web, and agents who sell TONIK link to an online enrollment interface that the insurer hosts.

While the success of TONIK itself it notable, the reasons for the success are even more surprising. First of all, TONIK is described not only in plain language, but also in appropriate slang for the target audience. Even the plan names are intended to please the young target buyer…

“Part-Time-Dare-Devil”, “Thrillseeker” and “Calculated Risk Taker”. Quite a departure for a venerated company like Anthem, who for years extolled tradition as a central value for health insurance.

Probably even more than the names, ancillary benefits (dental and vision) entice buyers to choose TONIK. You may never have a heart attack, but you will certainly need an eye exam and a teeth cleaning.

Each of the three varieties of TONIK include dental and vision benefits, without an additional cost. So while you want the coverage in case of an accident, you know you will use the Dental and Vision for sure.

I don’t think it will be long before other companies create exciting (as exciting as insurance can be) health plans to compete, but in the mean time, TONIK is setting records for a 65 year old company, and that is saying something.

Government Intrusion Versus Natural Health Care, Swine Flu Vaccination Or Individual Responsibility

June 13th, 2010
Randal A. Pope asked:

In mid June the WHO (World Health Organization) declared the Swine Flu a level 6 pandemic, and they are predicting that it will resurface this fall in a new and deadly form. Their solution is the mandatory distribution of a new, untested vaccine. The United States Emergency Medical Powers Acts and other Federal legislation provides for mandatory vaccination, with no exemptions.

By the time this new vaccine is administered, there will not have been sufficient time to properly test it. Because there is not adequate time to test this vaccine for safety, Congress and the FDA have exempted the vaccine manufacturers from liability for any complications, including death, caused by the vaccine. According to the President, “The most important thing…is to make sure that state and local officials prepare to implement a vaccination program in the fall…” In other words, full steam ahead with no regard for the health and safety of American citizens.

In 1976, President Ford ordered mandatory vaccination of the entire population of the United States because of a Swine Flu scare after the death of Pvt. David Lewis of Fort Dix was connected to the Swine Flu. During that outbreak, Pvt. Lewis was the only death attributed to the Swine Flu in the US. On the other hand hundreds were killed or seriously injured by the inoculation administered by the government. Despite the uncertainty of the dangers of this vaccine in particular, and the history of the ineffectiveness and dangers of vaccines in general, your government wants to force it upon you at the threat of incarceration in a prison or other facility created for “Vaccine Resisters”.

Upon refusing to accept the administration of the Swine Flu vaccine, you will be classified a felon and subject to incarceration. Government officials are beginning to equate “Vaccine Resisters” to “terrorism”, which is a probable attempt to make use of more harsh measures and FEMA camps against those wishing to maintain control of their own health care.

Before your government begins killing and injuring her citizens again, you need to take measures to protect yourself. You can call and write your Federal and State Representatives asking them to provide for sanction-free exemptions from the proposed forced vaccinations. These exemptions can be based on religious belief, or an individual’s willingness to protect himself in his own home, a measure called “self-shielding”.

The Natural Solutions Foundation has been formed to combat an out of control government that wishes to control every aspect of your health care. You may wish to join with other freedom loving Americans in the battle against a forced and dangerous Swine Flu vaccination.

International Health Insurance

June 13th, 2010
Ellsworth Cannon asked:

You may not know this already, but when planning on traveling abroad you cannot take your local insurance with you. You will need to purchase an international insurance plan offered by a multinational insurance company. While they may be hard to track down, it is the best way to assure that in the event of an accident or illness you will be able to acquire medical attention if needed.

Many of these plans will cover you up to six months in another country. When you speak with the insurance company, be prepared to give an extensive list of information to them. This will range from health problems you’ve had in the past ten years, your hereditary conditions to substance abuse, and almost everything else-if it has anything to do with your health be prepared to disclose the information. If you are planning on traveling with more than one family member, then be prepared to give information for each family member as well.

Many times your basic coverage will include emergency treatment regardless of which facility it is administered. This is not the case with minor medical treatment. It is important to know whether you are buying an insurance plan that is an HMO or PPO. If you are under an HMO or health maintenance organization, then you will be limited to receiving care from only the providers who are in their network. You can retrieve a list of all the companies within your insurer’s network upon request. If you are under a PPO, or preferred provider organization, you will have the opportunity to pick the best facility you see fit, but your insurer will only cover a portion of the incurred cost.

If you plan on staying abroad for more than six months then you will need to look into what is called expatriate health insurance. Only larger companies supply this type of insurance, as it is much more extensive with the type of options that can be applied to each policy. The type of treatment options that are covered with expatriate health insurance are those that are labeled as specialty treatments, like chiropractic therapy and acupuncture. There are many options that can be applied to expatriate health insurance depending on your family’s needs and how long you plan on spending abroad.

There are many options for health insurance when you are traveling abroad. While many individuals never consider purchasing insurance when traveling to another country, this should be at the top of your list when planning for a trip. Health insurance should not be taken lightly. Be sure you understand every aspect of your policy before deciding with any one particular company.

Using Organic Astragalus

June 12th, 2010
Anne Harvester asked:

Organic astragalus has gone by many names in its history, including milkvetch and loco weed. Botanically, the plant is classified as a legume, placing it with the same family as peas, beans and alfalfa; unlike its relatives however, it bears no pods.

Organic astralagus herb is known as huang-qi in its native region of northeastern China, Mongolia and Korea, where a great deal of bulk organic astralagus is obtained. A perennial, the astralagus plant grows to a height of three feet. The part of the plant that is used for herbal therapy is actually the root, which is harvested during the fourth year of growth.

Practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) consider organic astralagus root to be “yang” in nature; these physicians use it to treat conditions that include poor appetite and lassitude as well as some conditions of the stomach and (in women) the uterus.

TCM practitioners dry bulk organic astralagus root and boil it in combination with ginseng. The resulting liquid is then strained and the decoction is administered to patients orally.

Organic astralagus root is also believed to have adaptogenic properties by strengthening the immune system and may actually lower blood pressure. However, there has been very little actual scientific research on organic astralagus carried out to confirm this. Some research being conducted by U.S. and Chinese pharmaceutical firms does suggest that organic astralagus root contains biochemical substances that may someday be used in the treatment of HIV and age-related diseases, but these studies are still in their preliminary stages.

Ointments made with organic astralagus may be applied to cuts and other wounds; in addition, it may be taken in powdered form in a capsule as well as a tincture.

There have been some claims that astralagus may also inhibit the growth of cancers and prevent diabetes. While research in this area is inconclusive, some U.S. studies show that astralagus supplements can help cancer patients in mitigating the damage to their immune systems following chemo or radiation therapy.

For people in normal health, the use of organic astralagus herb poses very little risk. However, until more is learned about it, organic astralagus root should not be used by people who suffer from autoimmune diseases. People who take anti-rejection drugs, particularly cyclophosphamide and corticosteroids, should avoid taking organic astralagus unless it is approved by their primary care physician.

In addition, organic astralagus herb is known to cause interactions with or reduce the effectiveness of certain over-the-counter medications.

Anyone who keeps a supply of bulk organic astralagus should consult with a licensed herbalist or naturopathic physician before attempting to use this herb for therapeutic purposes and avoid taking more than the recommended dosage.

Best Type of Health Insurance – For You

June 12th, 2010
Marilyn Katz asked:

Should You Choose an HSA, HMO, or PPO Health Insurance Plan?

Before you can decide which type of medical plan you should take, you need to learn the basics. So many people just pick a plan based on price or finding a familiar doctor on the list without ever taking the time to really understand what they bought. The differences between the different health insurance models is pretty large, but it should not take long for you to learn them.

Health Maintenance Organization (HMO): This is the most restrictive type, and it always has a list of network providers. In order to be covered, you must use that list almost all of the time. There are a few exceptions, such as emergencies and rare approved cases where there is no network provider for a service doctors say you need.

Some people do not like the restrictions. On the other hand, some groups have very large and diverse provider networks that are convenient to use. Because this structure allows the insurer to control costs, it can be a plan with low out of pocket costs for the consumer too.

Preferred Provider Organization (PPO): These are similar to HMO plans. They also have a network of medical providers. However, you only need to use the list to get the best coverage. You can still be covered, at a lower level, if you leave the network.

Again, there will probably be some exceptions to the network restrictions in the case of urgent medical concerns, emergencies, or rare cases where there is no network providers.

Many people like PPO plans because they are more flexible than HMO plans. The network still helps the insurer control costs, so claims are usually simple and out of pocket costs are controlled.

HSA Health Plans (Health Savings Accounts): These are a little different. You will get a high deductible major medical insurance plan with a health savings account. You must make contributions to the account, and you use this account to pay for out of pocket health services.

HSA Advantages

The account contributions can be deducted from your taxes (up to IRS limits). The account can be used to pay out of pocket costs like your deductible or copays. You can even use it for other approved medical costs like dental care or glasses. Money rolls over from year to year. You do not have to spend it all. Many accounts pay interest at competitive rates. The account money can be taken out at retirement age. If it never got used, you can add it to your retirement savings. Is an HSA best for everybody? Well, actually people must be disciplined savers to really enjoy the benefits of this type of plan. If the member never saves any money, they may not have anything in the account to help them pay out of pocket costs. Some people liked the idea of an HSA account and high deductible health plan, but then switched back to a PPO or HMO because it just did not work out well for them. It is a bit more complicated, but gives a good saver the power to control medical costs.

Health Insurance is made up of three different type’s namely- Indemnity, managed care plans and government-sponsored health insurance. Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages but it all depends on the kind of coverage you desire.

- Indemnity Plans: – This plan can also be called the fee-for- service plans. The payment of any medical care is the sole responsibility of the policy holders and are gradually or fully refunded by their health care provider.Indemnity plan, the patient is allowed to choose the doctors he want. How To Safely Stay Clear From The Flu

June 11th, 2010
Sandor Cruz asked:

It’s very possible to stay flu-free, even during the flu season. You can get a flu shot but are prepared for the possible side effects and health hazards associated with the flu vaccine? Don’t take the risk because there are healthier ways to avoid the flu.

The flu shot, along with other vaccines, contains hazardous substances such as mercury, which has been connected to autism in young children, and formaldehyde and phenol.

Vaccines are risky. Do you still want to inject toxins to your body just to avoid the flu?

Forget about the flu vaccine, stay clear from the flu with the following tips:

Wash your hands frequently with warm soapy water, before and after preparing food, before and after meals, after going to the toilet, or whenever you feel like your hands are dirty. This simple healthy habit will help protect you against communicable diseases such as the flu.

Make sure that the areas, surfaces and items in your home that you and your family use the most are clean and disinfected frequently.

Choose to live healthy. A healthy lifestyle will increase your natural defenses against the flu. Choose tea over coffee, limit the amount of sugar you take and get the right amount of sleep regularly.

Listen to your body and rest when signs of the flu manifest. Taking a short break is better than going down hard with a bad case of the flu and being forced out of action.

If you have a weak your immune system, avoid unnecessary contact with other people, especially in crowded places.

Drink a quart of water per 50 pounds of your body weight and avoid beverages which contain caffeine.
